A Moderator, also known as a Mod, is a term used to describe someone who is either a Forum Moderator, Player Moderator, Local Moderator, or Jagex Moderator.

Forum Moderator[]

A Forum Moderator, also known as a Forum Mod or FMod, is a player chosen by Jagex to help maintain the RuneScape Forums. Forum Moderators have the ability to lock threads, hide posts from public view, and muting players. Their posts on the forums can be identified with a green background. One must accept an invitation from Jagex to obtain this position.[1] As of 25 April 2014, there are 69 Forum Moderators.[2]

A Player Moderator, also known as a PMod, is a player chosen by Jagex to help monitor and maintain the in-game RuneScape environment. Player Moderators have the ability to issue a 48-hour mute to any abuse reports they submit. In-game, they can be identified with a silver crown or a silver star (Player Moderator silver badge) if they are members of the gold Premier Club. One must accept an invitation by Jagex from the Message Centre to receive this position.[3]

Dual Moderator[]

A Dual Moderator is a player who is both a Forum Moderator and a Player Moderator.

Local Moderator[]

A Local Moderator, also known as a Local Mod or LMod, is a Community Management team member working for one of Jagex's official partners. They can be identified with a purple crown next to their name in chat, and a purple outline in the RuneScape Forums. The Local Moderator program was discontinued in 2015,[4] and revived on 3 February 2018.[5]

A Jagex Moderator, also known as a Jagex Mod or JMod, is a person who works for Jagex. Since Jagex was founded in 2001, it has went from 4 employees to around 550 as of 2013.[6] Most of their staff work on assisting players, developing content, and testing game features before they are released. Abilities of a Jagex Moderator range from muting and banning other players, to teleporting to any location in RuneScape. Jagex Moderator accounts are used for work-related purposes.

They can be identified with a gold crown next to their name in chat, and a gold background in the RuneScape Forums. To become a Jagex Moderator, one has to submit a successful application for an available position at Jagex.[7]
